The Soviet Response to the Petrothe Event
The Soviets saw this interlocking set of exercises that were from their point of view extremely provocative. One officer who was they had happened to be the head of Air Force intelligence in Europe a real guy named Gerald Lenny Peruse he saw this going on and said no we should bring able archer 83 to a close as quickly as we can. He did so without the benefit of intelligence that CIA had that had been collected from all like Gordievsky by the British where Gordievsky was warning the British that they think this is real.
