The Sectarian War Unleashed by the 2003 US Led Invasion

The US was instrumental to stoking sectarian divisions in Iraq as a way of undermining the insurgency. Max Boot's book The Road Not Taken is a biography of CIA operative Edward Lansdale, whose career included development of psychological warfare and suppression of popular anti-colonial movements. In both cases though, this alternative history tactic is always predicated on the idea that the war in question was ultimately and irrefutably good and necessary.
