The story is set in 19 22 new jersey, a time of prohibition and rising crime. The episcopalian minister edward hall comes from a middle-class working class background. He finds himself suddenly in the midst of wealthy New Jersey society after marrying an older woman who had lots of money. "I think that he certainly benefited from marrying up," says author Lisa Kogan.
