Pilot was trying to get out of the whole crucifixion thing with jesus. And then it flipped around, and the crowd screamed. The more people perceived that jesus was presenting himself as the son of man and the saviour and the messiah, the rage grew up. First in the sadducees and the pharisees, the religious leaders, were outraged first. Then the mob of anger and hatred just grew because the ego cannot stand innocence. It's appalled at forgiveness. That's exactly the reaction you might expect.
