Gotoba - A Man of Letters and Arms

Gotoba was a man of letters as well as arms, and quite well regarded as a poet. He devoted himself not only to hunting small birds or racing horses, but also to swimming, acrobatics, sumo wrestling, archery and above all, to practising the arts of war. The jolkuki describes him as being concern that the hojo had usurped the rights of the minamo to shogans which they had not earned themselves.
