As a child, ida tarbell was warned to avoid the open oil pits that speckled her neighbourhood. John d. Rockefeller had recently incorporated a new company known as standard oil and he had high hopes for its future. When it's discovered that standard oil has the sweetheart deal with the railroad companies,. there's an uprising in oil. After they wouldn't greet each other any more. They would cross the street rather than pass close to them. All this leaves a permanent mark on people like franklin tarbell. According to ida, he no longer comes home eager to regale his family with stories of his work day. His after dinner cigar no longer seems able to relax
