If you'd had a rank choice voting system. during the republican primary, when trump ran in 20 16, he almost certainly would not have won that nomination. If other voters had been able to rank their candidates, you probably would have seen another non trump candidate emerge. It also discourages negative campaigning because if i trash my opponent, and there are a bunch of people in the field, then maybe you like y my trashe less, but you also like me less,. And then a third person will end up benefiting. This is another archaic mechanism we've been saddled with, which is this plurality voting system.
