Debussy avoids the ecstasy and devastation of someone like Mahler. Instead he creates a sort of apathy that nevertheless holds us completely captivated. Debussy also creates a sense of waves and ebb and flow, by writing for some instruments to get louder and softer as they play. The piece was turned into a ballet by Vaslav Nijinsky.
