The Role of the International Brigades in the Spanish Republican Army

The Spanish Republican Army was almost 90% conscripts. One in five people who volunteered to fight for the Republic were foreign. About 120,000 Spaniards volunteered to fight the Republic and you compare that to 30,000 foreign volunteers. The reason is quite simply motivation and morale because they wanted to be there. They will hold a hill for days when another unit would melt away in hours. And Michael says despite the demoralization, despite the losses, these units still fight very hard.
