The Three Stages of Family Evolution

The first family type as I mentioned above is the consingwine family. Another angle says the marriage groups are separated according to generations. Each generation sees all members of its group as brothers and sisters even if today we would call them cousins and what not. The incest taboo applies in this context only to different generations meaning sexual relationships between parents and children or between grandchildren and grandparents were taboo. That's the first stage. The second family stage is the Pune-Luan family stage. In this stage the incest taboo was extended gradually over time no doubt first to siblings of the same mother and then gradually and in different places at different times to all siblings who had either parent in common.
