The Effects of Traumatic Events on the Brain

What qualifies, in air quotes, a experience or an event as traumatic versus merely stressful? And is there kind of a balance between a singular, really traumatic event versus long-term, low-grade, stressful experiences? Yeah, you just asked a set of really sort of essential questions to this whole area. Most of those questions are under investigation. But we do know something. One of the things that we do know is that if there's an extreme event where an individual is completely disregulated and their stress response systems are activated in extreme and prolonged ways, and that will change the regulatory set point of these networks. Then the individual will tend to be more reactive and tuned up.
