Montaigne's younger brother was killed by a tennis ball. How you deal with that chance including the chance of random death tells you a lot about an individual's human's character. Montaigne does judge people in part by their willingness to embrace a certain kind of randomness and to live with it. You can't avoid it when you read him, he's so fresh, he feels so present there on his estate, in his chateau, up the tower, in the library, shut off but speaking to us across the centuries.
