The writers were figuring out their relationship at the same time that jim and pam were. These are two people on journeys trying to find themselves, and hopefully that leads them back to each other. There's a great scene on the dvd where michael is trying to get everyone to loosen up during grief counselling. And when pam walks into the room, kevan's feet are up on her chair and his shoes are of yes, people wrote in and asked about that. In the script, dwight was supposed to say this: "In the blizzard of 97, 12 shreots died in the basement of our house"
