There's a really great series of essays that robert boyle writes called occasional reflections. He talks about himself as when he's in his lab. mossy and decomposed bodies, rocks, storms, pieces of soil, they speak to him. And air pump is apparatus that he has created, like a wege board, essentially to listen to them. Lator spends a lot of time in his other writings talking about non humans and how they can speak,. They speak through us, and they speak throurh instruments.
