Geostationary Orbit - What Is It?

A geostationary orbit keeps satellites in a fixed position over the same point on the surface of the earth, 24 hours a day. This is important for communication purposes and even weather monitoring. A satellite which is placed at 35,786 kilometers above the meansy level will have the same orbital period as the earth.
