The Death of a Priest
The last Bethany locked eyes with me and slowly shook her head. I'm so sorry, she said. It wants your faith. Without warning she began to convulse, thrashing in an obvious pain. In the end they couldn't save her. Brain hemorrhage, they said, probably from the blow to the head when she hit the mirror, they just hadn't spotted it. Annie almost got suspended over the matter, but was spared further disciplinary action as she had been simply passing on the wishes of the patient. And for a couple of years that was it. But looking back I can't really be sure what I was drinking.
