Getting to Know Your Characters

Joy's happiness is her protection against feeling vulnerable. So learning that, how do we learn that about Joy? I just started with what does Joy believe about the world and what does she want? She wants Riley to be happy. Sadness is getting in her way of that want. Knowing those beliefs is really, really important. It's becoming emotionally intimate with your main character. And that sometimes just takes time.
