Aquinas' Understanding of Moral Virtues
In Aquinas' understanding, the moral virtues have to do with rightly ordered attitudes and actions primarily towards created goods. For example, temperance concerns forming one's desires for food to fit with what is reasonably known to be healthy for you. The trustworthy person has formed his attitude through recognizing and choosing to fulfill these obligations and promises. When he does it consistently, he forms his good moral strength of character. So some level of natural moral virtue is attainable without the supernatural help of God's grace.
