I Understand or I Fear Dogs Frighten Me?

Internal mental state verbs tend to have more variation across languages and across cultures as to how you can use them. In English, it's less common to say something like you understand with the meaning of I infer you understand based on the evidence of you seeming to understand. That is a subtle but important meaning distinction, I feel. And this is marked as a feature of the grammar, rather than just being implicit or optional.
