The Origins of Offices
The first real offices in the sense of a large space dedicated to bureaucratic work are thought to have arrived on the scene in the late 17th and early 18th century. What is thought to be the first large office was built in 1726 in London and was called the old Admiralty Office. An admiral is the most senior naval officer in the army, it's the person who commands the navy. So the old Admirality Office was the headquarters of the British Navy. Shortly afterwards, the East India Company opened its own dedicated office in the city of London,. using it as a base to manage the huge bureaucracy involved with essentially governing an entire country, India, from thousands of kilometres away.
