In east european jewish folk music, whether a song is a tragic dirge or an ecstatic dance is completely dependent on the words used by the writer. Schastakovitch naturally adored this ambiguity because it allowed him to make his music almost deliberately unclear. No one could accuse him of writing needlessly sad music if he could just say that it was based on a happy song,. despite the music sounding sad. It was a reckless, borderline insane decision to write a piece based on jewish folk poetry at a time of this much anti semetism.
