The Importance of Recognizing the Contraries of Innocence
Murdoch does not envision innocence and experience as fixed, dualist concepts. Tom's blind innocence results in varying degrees of evil causing both him and those around him to suffer. It is only once Thomas acknowledged the presence of his demons that he can move beyond his blind innocence. For Murdoch then, like Blake, the contrary states of human existence must be acknowledged. Evil may have to be lived with, but it remains evil and we live too with real possibility of improvement.
