Introduction
The poling industry, we are told, is this hugely important pillar of british democracy. Now in a general election campaign, they play a particularly important role. They tell us which parties got them, ameni which politicians are winning people over and who's going up or down. That's instrumental in shaping the media narrative. So posters don't just measure a generalelection campaign - they actually help determine its direction,. if you like, and therefore its outcome. There's always been critics of polling. But opinion poles are a device for influencing public opinion, not a device for measuring it. Crack that and it will make sense.
