The Sacrament of Confession

If Jesus has paid for all of our sins, why do we have to keep asking God for forgiveness? The church teaches that it's possible to receive God's forgiveness outside of the sacrament of confession. And one of those means is confession. But even Protestants deep down know they're not really saved if they don't confess every single sin.
