The Importance of Pilgrimage in the Buddhist World
I think perhaps because I'm a rather neurotic intellectual who lives most of the time in my head, that I very much value going to physical sites. And there's something almost magical, I feel, about being, for example, in the places we know where the Buddha was. In those places, there's very little left as a rule. Just brick foundations and monasteries that were built 500 years after the Buddha. But when you go to some of these early rock cut temples, I really feel the presence of those past generations would have lived and worked simply in these places.
