The Federal Emergency in Flint
Legionnaires disease and ammonia type illness is caused by breathing in Legionella bacteria found in untreated fresh water. Since the switch to the Flint River in 2014, cases of Legionnaires disease in the area had more than quadrupled the rates of prior years. The elderly and those with compromised immune systems are most affected. President Obama declared a federal emergency one week after Snyder's announcement.
