The History of the Swiss Watch Industry
The invention of the quartz watch movement in the 1960s was a big technology shock for the watch industry. Seiko released the first production quartz wristwatch, worth about the price of a new car at the time. By the mid-1970s, one could be had for an order of magnitude less than a comparable Swiss watch.
