Cows are not just burping carbon dioxide. They're burping methane, which is far more powerful of a greenhouse gas than the carbon dioxide that would be released if you simply burned that grass instead of feeding it to a cow. And therefore, very smart people think that the beef industry is probably contributing very substantially to global warming. I find myself increasingly when I do eat meat eating beef,. But I still worry about it chiefly from a climate perspective.
