The Nervousness of the Manufacturers of Manchester in England
The Industrial Revolution happens in Europe in the 1780s in North America. Almost all of that cotton then comes from the just born United States, which emerges in the late 18th century. All of that cotton is grown by enslaved labor. But this makes some European manufacturers nervous because they understand that slavery is not necessarily a very stable system of production of cotton. And so they are trying to secure raw cotton from areas where slave labor is not dominant.
