In the game, players are punished for actions that create irreversibility. They can only move boxes in certain areas of a warehouse if they want to escape. This is an arena in which you know you can apply the appropriate penalty. But scaling it up to a real world setting is far from obvious. There's one approach that i think is pretty interesting that comes from alex turner. He suggests picking some small number of random reward functions and then asking whether these randomly generated goals will still work.
