The Democratic Party has always been at odds with each other over what their vision for governing America looks like. The party endured its long political majority, 58 out of 62 years in the 20th century, because it had a large segregationist wing linked to the liberal Northeast wing. And that alignment ideologically has changed, but you still have a large number of people in the party who are the swing vote.
