In 628, mohammed and a small group of his friends and allies travelled unarmed to mecca as pilgrims. He marched in, peacefully, sat down and then demanded to negotiate a peaceful settlement. Rihtand the normal way that battles tended to happen in arabia is that parties, groups, bands would meet out in the open desert and do battle with each other. But in this case,mohammed had the medinan forces withdraw into the city, take shelter in the surrounding hills and dig a trench around the one side of the city that was exposed.
