I like to think of the possible moments when what America could be or can be kind of comes into view. It's always reaching for the possible as opposed to instantiating who we think we are, he says. The thing that keeps me up when we talk about this is it feels like every time that impulse changes our laws to try and level the playing field, we erase that. He adds: "We don't know how we pull that out of our political sphere"
