Marie LaVoe worked as a hairdresser, catering to women at all levels of New Orleans society. It's been guessed that LaVoe cultivated a massive network of informants from among the city's slaves. There were always a line of carriages in front of her house and the white ladies who entered were heavily veiled. She gave them powders to use on their husbands and bones to put in their pockets.
