The debate around the book seems to have reached a fever pitch. The criticism is that guns, germs and steel completely over emphasizes the role of geography in shaping how a society will develop. Diamond does see the quoo fates of human societies as being entirely tied to the quirks of local geography. But many take issue with diamond's insistence that geographic factors are unambiguously the most important things one must cons when trying to understand history's broadest pattern.
