The History of NASA

The Langley Research Centre had started life as laboratory to design airplanes. Highly educated women were recruited in large numbers to do a very specific task. Initially they only recruited white women but in the Second World War they started to recruit graduates from black colleges. It was only when the Langley base was incorporated into NASA in 1958 that segregation ended. When Christine Darden herself joined NASA in 1967 she was assigned to the computer pool.
