The dutch were facing their own crisis, which was that they were trying to maintain an independence of spain. They needed a huge income source with high profits, which was the spice trade. And so in a way, had to do it for their own survival. The british took over because chocolate, tea and coffee became more important than spice. That's the world we remember, british empire, not the dutch empire.
