Introduction

The woman was the first one awake, as she always was. The sun was starting to peak up over the crusted hills to the east. It was time for her husband to shake the fatigue from his bones and get to work. She wrapped a hunk of hard cheese, half a loaf of bread, and some salted beef in a woolen bundle and filled the skin with water. Her husband had made the bronze fibula himself, turning his skills from his usual weaponry to this item. He had made it when they were both young and foolish before their children.
