Nick Bostrom: The self is a linguistic self in us. Dan Dennett's made a very great deal of this and I think he does it very well. He thinks that consciousness couldn't exist without language. We know what happens when humans aren't single minded. It leads to pathology. When people have to own more selves, they get into trouble. So then my next question is that should we actually then aim to build sentient machines or should we just say that, okay, leave this thing alone and just don't do this?
