Acute Severe Hypertension in the Pediatric ICU

Fluid overload especially in patients on chronic dialysis is also a common cause of acute hypertension. Endocrine conditions such as Cushing disease, NCO chromocytoma and rarely preeclampsia can be seen in pregnant teenagers. Any patient with hypertensive emergency should be admitted to the pediatric ICU. Accurate blood pressure readings can be obtained using an arterial line which helps with titration of medication infusions.
