The idea of standardization and education was not widespread in their early days. The first us followed a model used by cambridge and oxford where students attended lectures and then had weekly meetings with au proctor to answer questions until the proctor determined they had mastered enough of the material to move on. It wasn't until the late 18 hundreds, after two centuries of american higher education, that we see the first recorded instance of letter grades at colleges,. And in that early grading system, e was the worst grade, signifying failure.
