The Great Vowel Shift
The great vowel shift consisted of a great raising of all long vowels. The highest two vowels essentially moved out of the way and shifted down toward the central part of the mouth. But for some reason, this clar vowe shift affected all the long vowel sounds in english. Apparently, they all moved in relation to each other.
