In 1838 Dickens wrote about a fried fish warehouse in a quote dismal alley. Not all the vendors were Jewish although they were all poor. Henry Mayhew counted between 250 and 350 fried fish sellers on London streets. You'd just buy a chunk of fried battered fish to snack on.
