In the past 20 years or so, both oxford and cambridge have pledged to increase the number of places offered to candidates from state schools. But there is still a way to go, with oxford at 68 % and cambridge at 71%. This being said, there are still critics who say that these statistics hide another ugly truth, and that is that not all state schools are created equal. Some are very high quality academically, while others are not. And for exceptionally talented students who have not been lucky enough to go to a good school, it can be incredibly hard to get into university.
