The Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1853
The Lazaritos physician whose name was Thomas Jefferson Perkins Stokes detained the ship for less than 24 hours and ordered its bilge pumped out. Within a couple of days cases of yellow fever began to appear in the immediate vicinity of that ship in the city of Philadelphia. That epidemic of 1853 spread for a radius of maybe five or six blocks. It wasn't a huge epidemic but on the heels of 33 years without any yellow fever it was very alarming.
