Gawker did not have $100 million to give Hulk Hogan, and Denton's insurance was not such that it would likely cover damages. A quirk of Florida law held that in order to appeal a civil verdict, petitioners have to post supersetis. Gawker didn't have $50 million on hand either, which would be the amount it would have to put in escrow with the state of Florida if it was to lose an appeal.
