The H3 System: A Distinctive Global Grid System

H3 is a discrete global grid system. Every position on the world has a cell identifier associated with it. hexagons have this very, very nice property that all of the neighbors of the hexagons are the same distance apart. And this makes it much more convenient to run a variety of different algorithms and model it on top of the grid. We need a shape which we can tile over effectively the entire Earth.
