The Flood Narrative of Genesis Three Uses Symbolic Language
The church hasn't ruled directly on the flood narrative of genesis six to nine, but it has acknowledged that this range of chapters includes passages that can contain a high degree of symbolism. Some time ago, i did a study of magisterial texts about texts in early genesis. And i documented quite a number of examples where popes have been willing to say that elements in early genesis are symbols. We may talk about those findings in a future episode, but for now, suffice it to say that the church allow a great deal of flexibility here.
