Having a writer from Turkey is a very fractured existence because on the one hand you can see that words matter, you know, stories matter. A book is not a personal item necessarily in Turkey, for instance, where I come from if a reader likes a book, they don't just put it back on the shelf. In countries where there's no proper freedom of speech, paradoxically, literature actually has an additional power. To me, the only way that it works is when I'm inside a story, I really forget about this so-called real world"
