William's Plan to Avoid Forgiveness
William the Conqueror was mad at St. Athlthrith for barring his access to her church. The king's childhood friend, Fitzgill Bear, had been involved in the barring of the church. He berated monks assembled there and told them they must meet with a king on their behalf or face retribution. After much discussion in court, it was decided that the monks could have forgiveness if they paid 700 marks of silver. But what are you gonna do when your bros look for somewhere to put their lances?
